A

for 2000 years the Vietnamese had fought against invasion and conquer. It was also said by historians that they had survived for the 1000 or so years of foreign (Chinese) domination and only suffer little cultural damage ie. not just assimilating like most countries.

A

Vietnam was a gateway to South East Asia and mainland China. It was a trading point in Asia and was rich in rice, copper, and coal. It was also very accessible to waterways

While France was fighting in Europe japan stepped in and took Vietnam and they were welcomed in open arms by the Vietnamese as they were bewildered by how an Asian race was able to conquer a European one.

A

In the 5 years of Japan’s occupation, the region was pillaged to fuel the armies back in Japan. this resulted in the Starvation of 25% of North Vietnamese (1.5-2mil)

A

The North Vietnamese sent torpedos at the US Maddox in retaliation for a south Vietnamese attack and America used this as an excuse to go to war on the North. They lied about a second, unprovoked attack to raise the public opinion of going to war. Johnson asked for congress to pass a resolution that stated “take all necessary measures to repel any armed attack”

In 68 the Viet Cong attacked central, South Vietnam. In 25 days the Viet Cong had suffered a staggering 45,000casualties. In contrast, the US only suffered 1,500 casualties. however, this attack killed the morale of the Soldiers and 60% of them saw the battle as a failure
