Population Flashcards
how do you calculate population density
Total population/total land area in km2
what areas of the world are more densely populated
places with temperate climates. places nearer to the equator and places with a reliable source of water. Places that are not very mountainous and easy to traverse. And places with fertile soil, fit for growing crops and making food.
What human factors cause population density to rise
Work opportunities. Good facilities. Access to transport and travel. Education
define overpopulation
Overpopulation is a function of the number of individuals compared to the relevant available resources
what are some problems that come with overpopulation
It speeds up the process of global warming and pollution. there is a higher demand for natural resources and materials. forests are cut down and overcrowding causes diseases to spread faster.
what factors cause overpopulation in MEDCs like GBR
immigration and high birth rates. Immigrants that come from countries with high birth rates will also bring their culture of high birth rates with them.
what problems have arisen in GBR due to OP
a lack of jobs and houses. Overcrowding in suburban and central areas.
what problems have arisen in Nigeria due to OP
crowding (50 people to a bathroom)
youth unemployment is about 50%
there is little access to contraception
how can OP in GBR compare to OP in Nigeria
Nigeria overpopulation causes suffering and for many to go without food or the basic necessities. This usually stays within Nigeria and doesn’t directly affect the rest of the world. but in Britain it causes the rate of consumption to Increase and this means they have to import more food from other countries and this affects everyone,
define overfishing
catching too many fish; fishing so much that the fish cannot
sustain their population
how much has the global appetite for fish changed in the last 30yrs
45 - 91 million metric tones
how does overpopulation contribute to overfishing
when there are more people on the earth more people need food and the ocean is the largest food source in on the planet. this causes more and more fish to be caught in more and more environmentally harmful ways.
what are some arguments that OP is a myth
the UN states that the population will start to level out around 2050 and hit it’s peak. The population needs to grow to replace the previous generation. (we have enough land to live and grow on) We have plenty of food to give to everyone.
how does poverty make an effect
so long as there is poverty. the population will continue to grow. This is due to how women are unable to get schooling and don’t end up having a career so they have kids earlier rather than later. Places with poverty will also have higher death rates and so that brings along higher fertility rates so that all of a woman’s children don’t die.
how much of Japan’s population do the elderly take up
26%
why is a deplenishing population not great
nobody can support the elderly who cant look after themselves
what are the age ranges of the pyramid
15- are the young dependents
16-64 are the economically active
65+ are the old dependents
what are the intervals of the pyramid
five years eg. 0-4
what does a developing country’s pyramid look like
large base, narrow top (high birth rates) (lower life expectancy)
what does a developed country’s pyramid look like
narrower base taller top
what does an ageing country’s pyramid look like
narrow base but large top and middle`
what is an ageing population
When the average age of a population is rising.
what is the definition of fertility rate
the number of children born per woman in their lifetime.
life expectancy
average number of years that people are expected to live to
birth rate
average number of live births in a year per 1000
death rate
average number of death in a year per 1000
growth rate
difference between the birth rate and the death rate
infant mortality rate
number of children dying before their 1st birthday per 1000
