Section 4 Definition of a victim
A person whom an offence is committed by another person and
a person who suffers injuries, damage to property committed by another and
a parent or legal guardian of a child or young person, unless that parent is the person charged and
a member of the immediate family of a person who has been killed by an offence.
Section 7 VRA 2002
Any person who deals with a victim must treat that victim with compassion and courtesy and respect the victims dignity and privacy.
Section 8 VRA 2002
A victim or member of of a victims family who has welfare, health, counselling, medical or legal needs arising from the offence should have access to services that are responsive to those needs.
Section 11 VRA 2002
A victim must as soon as it comes into contact with a support agency practicably be told about the support on offer.
Section 12(1)(a) VRA 2002
A victim must be told as soon as practicable about the progress of the investigation.
Section 16(4) VRA 2002
Restriction of disclosing victim’s contact details in evidence or information provided in court.
Details can only be provided with the approval of a judicial officer. Only name and age can be disclosed.
Section 29
Specified Offence: Serious violence offences, sexual violence offences, offences that have resulted in serious injury or death or an offence of another kind that has lead to the victim to have ongoing fears for his/her safety or for the safety of ones family.
What is the VNR
The VNR is is a register where a victim of a Section 29 offence can elect to be placed on in order to receive information on offender’s whereabouts whilst in custody.
Section 30(2)
Police must obtain the victim’s views on bail
