Vibrio
curved, gram negative rods. ocean dwelling. can infect wounds contaminated by seawater.
causes fecal-oral gastroenteritis
V. cholerae
fecal-oral transmission, attaches and colonizes the intestines, secretes choleragen that messes with signal transduction to cause diarrhea. antibiotic treatment not necessary.
H. pylori
causes stomach ulcers, associated with stomach cancer, produces urease which irritates stomach lining
10-14 day course of 3 antibiotics with Pepto Bismol and proton pump inhibitors
Urea Breath test
patients with H. pylori will exhale radiolabeled carbon dioxide
choleragen
A-B subunit enterotoxin that interferes with signal transduction, secreted by V. cholerae
urease
produced by H pylori, coverts urea to ammonia which neutralizes the stomach acid
