What is the Codex Alimentarius?
Set up by FAO and WHO in 1963.Main aims:
• Protect the health of consumers across the worlds
• Ensure fair practices in et international food trade
What are notifiable diseases?
They are either:
- Endemic – currently present in the UK, such as TB in cattle.
- Exotic – not present in UK normally
Why are some diseases notifiable?
- Animal health and welfare
- Public health
- Economic threat
- Wider society
- Having regard for the cost to the community
- Having regard for availability of appropriate solutions
How is a suspicion of a notifiable disease reported?
- Notify the animals and plant health agency as soon as possible
- Provide the telephone number, name and address
- Provide the location of the suspect animals
- Provide the clinical signs you have observed and any other information that leads you to suspect a notifiable disease
- Until an APHA veterinarian arrives, stay on the farm and prevent movement of all animals or animal products, people, vehicles, etc, onto or off the premises, so as to not spread disease
What are the main aims of the World Organisation for Animal Health?
- Ensure transparency in the global animal disease situations
- Scientific excellence in disease study
- International support to developing countries in the control of animal diseases
- Sanitary safety – health standards for international trade in animals and animals products
- Food safety – provide a better guarantee of the safety of the food of animal origin
