Define unconscious bias.
Unconscious bias – idea that background, culture and identity impact decision making without being consciously aware of the fact.
What are the 9 characteristics stated by the Equality Act of 2010?
- Age
- Disability
- Gender reassignment
- Marriage and civil partnership
- Pregnancy and maternity
- Race
- Religion or belief
- Sex
- Sexual orientation
Define microaggression.
Microaggressions – indirect, subtle or unintentional actions of discrimination against members of marginalised groups.
Define privilege.
Privilege – privileged people are considered to be ‘the norm’ and gain invisibility in society.
What are the ABCs of intervening?
A = assess for safety
B = be in a group
C = care for the victim
What are the active bystander skills?
- Notice the event
- Interpret it as a problem
- Feel responsible for dealing with it
- Possess the necessary skills to act
What are the 5 Ds of bystander intervention?
Distract – take attention away from the target
Delegate – find an ally
Document – record what happened
Direct – find a safe way to intervene
Delay – check in with the victim
What is anti-racism?
Antiracism – an ongoing set of actions, active and constant. Comfort of non-marginalised people is not more important than the safety and humanity of racially marginalised people. Listen, do not re-traumatise marginalised people, do not tell marginalised people how to feel, educate yourself and do not make it the responsibility of marginalised groups to do so.
