What are POM-V medicines? Who can prescribe them? Who can supply them?
are prescription only medicines

a category of medicine for non-food animals (NFA)

- a written prescription is not required

What is SAES?
small animal exemption scheme
- exempt medicines
= caged birds, aquarium fish, rabbits, small rodents
are unlicensed medicines that do not require a MA because it meets criteria laid out in Schedule 6 of the Veterinary Medicines Regulation
What are unlicensed veterinary medicines? When and by whom can they be prescribed?
are unlicensed medicines that do not have a marketing authorisation and are not eligible for exemption through SAES
- includes any human medicines used for animals
can only be prescribed by veterinary surgeons under the cascade
What are the restriction on SAES? What can/cannot be sold under SAES?
these veterinary medicinal products can be placed on the market, imported or administered without an MA
- are unlicensed medicines
no restrictions on the retail sale or supply of these medicines
VMPs under SAES cannot contain:
- antibiotics, narcotics and psychotropics
What are suitably qualified persons?
people who have undergone training and passed examinations in order to prescribe and supply certain veterinary medicines
- POM-VPS, NFA-VPA and AVM-GSL
obtain qualifications from AMTRA
- animal medicines training regulatory authority
What are AVM-GSL? Who can prescribe them? Who can supply them?
authorised veterinary medicines
are available on general sale (GSL)
- no prescribing requirements
can be bought via retail
- no supplying requirements
What are prescriptions requirements for veterinary medicines?
prescriber details
- name, address, telephone number, qualification and signature
owners details
- name, address
animal details
- identification (name), species, address
date (valid for 6 months)
medicine details
- name, quantity, dose, administration
warnings and withdrawn periods
statement if prescribed under the cascade
if repeatable then the number of repeats
What are CD prescription requirements for veterinary medicines?
prescriber address must be in the UK
prescriber RCVS registration number
medicine details
- strength, formulation
date
- valid for 28 days only
declaration
- ‘this CD is prescribed for an animal or herd under the veterinarians care’
name and address of the person receiving the CD
if given in instalments then directions must be given
- amount of medicine per instalment and intervals between instalments

What is the order of the veterinary cascade?
veterinary medicine with a GB or UK marketing authorisation for species and condition indicated
veterinary medicine with a NI marketing authorisation for species and condition indicated
veterinary medicine with a GB or UK marketing authorisation for another species or different condition
a GB, NI or UK licensed human medicine OR veterinary medicine licensed outside of the UK
extemporaneously prepared or specially manufactured medicine
What must be recorded?
- normal prescriptions and CDs
normal prescription
- date of supply/receipt
- name of the VMP
- batch number
- quantity received or supplied;
- name and address of the supplier or recipient
- if there is a written prescription, the name and address of the prescriber and keep a copy of the prescription
CD prescription
- CD register
- POM register
What are labelling requirements under the cascade?
- name and address of the dispenser
- name of the prescribing veterinary surgeon
- name and address of the animal owner;
- identification of the animal (including species)
- date of supply;
- expiry date
- name or description of the product
= should at least include the name of active ingredients and quantity; - dosage and administration instructions
- any special storage precautions
- any necessary warnings for the user
- withdrawal period (for food producing animals)
