what does veterinary medicine directorate mean (VMD) ?
PROMOTES and PROTECT animal health, public health and the environment, by assuring the safety, quality and efficacy of veterinary medicines.
what is veterinary product committee (VPC)
Was set up in 1970 as an advisory body to the Department for Environmental, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA)
Provides scientific advice on any aspect of veterinary medicinal products and specified feed additives
Provides advice on specific issues relating to marketing authorisations
Considers reports of suspected adverse reactions to veterinary medicines
what are the categories for veterinary medicine?
- POM-V (Prescription only medicines-vet)
- POM-VPS (Prescription only medicines-vet, pharmacist, SQP)
- NFS-VPS (Non-food producing animal-vet, pharmacist, SQP)
- AVM-GSL (Authorised veterinary medicine-general sales list)
- SAES (Small animal exemption scheme)
- Unauthorised Veterinary medicine
what does POM- V?
POMs that can only be prescribed by a veterinary surgeon
Can be supplied by a veterinary surgeon or a pharmacist with a written prescription
For CDs, must carry a declaration by the vet stating that the medicine is prescribed for an animal or herd under his/her care
what is POM-VPS?
POMs that can be prescribed and supplied by a vet, pharmacist or suitably qualified person
Prescriber can give an oral or written prescription before supplying the product
Written prescription is only required if the supplier is not the prescriber
what is NFA- VPS?
Medicines for non-food animals that can be supplied by a vet, pharmacist or SQP
A written prescription is NOT required
Good practice requirement to keep records or medicines received or supplied
what is AVM-GSL?
May be supplied by any retailer without any restrictions, or prevision or advice
Pet shops, supermarkets and online
Exempt medicines under SAES
Medicines for the following species are exempt provided the animals are kept exclusively as pets and are not intended to produce food for human consumption:
aquarium animals, (including only fish kept in closed water systems)
cage birds (birds kept in cages or aviaries)
homing pigeons (pigeons kept for racing or exhibition)
terrarium animals (reptiles, amphibians and arthropods kept in tanks and cages – including animals free-living in domestic gardens)
small rodents (domestic mammals of the order rodentia)
ferrets
rabbits
