For CDs, must carry a declaration by the vet stating that the medicine is prescribed for an animal or herd under his/her care

Exempt medicines under SAES

A

Medicines for the following species are exempt provided the animals are kept exclusively as pets and are not intended to produce food for human consumption:

aquarium animals, (including only fish kept in closed water systems)
cage birds (birds kept in cages or aviaries)
homing pigeons (pigeons kept for racing or exhibition)
terrarium animals (reptiles, amphibians and arthropods kept in tanks and cages – including animals free-living in domestic gardens)
small rodents (domestic mammals of the order rodentia)
ferrets
rabbits

A

when there is no suitable liciensed vetinary medicine on the market

Unlawful to supply a human medicine against a veterinary prescription unless:
Prescribed using the veterinary cascade by a veterinary surgeon
Specifically states that it is “for administration under the Cascade” or similar

what are the legal requirements for sale of NFA-VPS and POM-VPS

A

Legal requirement for pharmacists supplying NFA-VPS medicines or prescribing POM-VPS medicines to:

Advise on the safe use of the product

Advise on any warnings or contra-indications

Be satisfied that the person using it is competent to use it and intends to use it for an authorised use

Not supply more than the minimum amount needed for treatment

A

yes

Unless the transaction has been individually authorised in advanced by a pharmacist and the person handing out the medicine is judged to be competent

Supply of the product must be from a registered pharmacy premises or premises which are registered under the latest Veterinary Medicines Regulations

The veterinary cascade

A

Where available it is legal requirement to:

Supply a veterinary medicine with GB or UK wide marketing authorisation (MA) for the species and condition indicated

Only when the above is not possible
Supply a veterinary medicine with a Northern Ireland (NI) MA for the species and condition indicated

Only when the above is not possible
Supply a of GB, NI or UK wide veterinary medicine licensed for ANOTHER species or DIFFERENT CONDITION can be considered

Only when the above is not possible
Supply a GB, NI or UK wide licensed HUMAN MEDICINE OR a veterinary medicine authorized OUTSIDE the UK

Only when the above is not possible
An extemporaneous or a specially manufactured medicine can be considered

what are the requirements for prescription for vet - POM- V and POM-VPS

A

Name and address of the owner

Identification and species of the animal and its address (if different from the owners)

Date: Rx valid for 6 months (28 days for schedule 2, 3 and 4 CDs)

Name, quantity, dose and administration instructions (must be specific) of the required medicines

Any necessary warnings and if relevant the withdrawal period

Where appropriate, a statement highlighting that the medicine is prescribed under the veterinary cascade

Name, address, telephone number, qualification and signature of the prescriber

what are the requirements for vet CD - 2 + 3

A

For Schedule 2 or 3 Controlled Drugs, must include the vets’ RCVS registration number, a declaration that “item has been prescribed for an animal or herd under their care”, and the usual CD prescription requirements apply

28 days for schedule 2, 3 and 4 CDs - Rx valid

A

If the medicine is not prescribed under the Cascade, no dispensing label is required. However, it is good practice to generate a dispensing label

Identification and species of the animal
Date of supply
Expiry date of the product - found in spc
The name of the product or the active ingredients
Product content quantity

Appropriate, special storage instructions
Any necessary warnings (e.g. administration, disposal, target species etc.)
Any applicable withdrawal period (The time between when the animal receives a medicine and when it can be safely used for food)
The words: “For animal treatment only”
The words: “Keep out of reach of children

what is the record keeping requirements for POM-V and POM-VPS

A

A record must be kept for receipts and supplies of POM-V and POM-VPS, and show:

Name of the medicine
Date of the receipt or supply
Batch number
Quantity
Name and address of the supplier or recipient
Name and address of the prescriber (if there is a written Rx)

  • Entry must be made on the same day that the sale or supply takes place
  • Records and documents kept for at least 5 years
