Veterinary Assistant
supports the veterinarian and/ or the veterinary technician in their daily tasks

Licensed Veterinary Technicians
- at least 18 yrs old
- obtained a passing score on: VTNE & LVTE

- 1st take the VTNE in order to apply for LVTE
Immediate supervision
supervision by a person who is within audible and visual range of both the animal patient and the person under supervision
Direct supervision
supervision of a person by a responsible veterinarian who is physically present on the premise
General supervision
supervision of a person by a responsible veterinarian who is readily available to communicate with the person
A licensed veterinary technician may? ( under the immediate supervision of a veterinarian)
- suture or close existing surgical skin incision & skin lacerations
- induce anesthesia
- extract loose teeth or dental fragments of companion animals w/ minimal periodontal attachments by hand & without the use of an elevator
A licensed veterinary technician may: (under the direct, immediate, or general supervision of a veterinarian)
- draw blood
- take samples for the purpose of testing & dignosis
- perform a task assigned by the supervising veterinarian under a level of supervision, determined by the veterinarian
a licensed veterinary technician or certified veterinary assistant may not
- perform surgery
- perform an invasive dental procedure, except as provided by subsection (a) (1) (c)
- diagnose or determine a prognosis for an animal disease or condition
- prescribe a drug or appliance
- initiate treatment without prior instruction by a veterinarian, except in case of an emergency
