Vestibular info Flashcards
VSR - vestibulospinal reflexes
reflexes that stabilize the body, control balance (righting reflexes)
VOR - vestibulo ocular reflexes
reflex where activation of the vestibular system triggers eye movement - stabilizes images on retinas during head movement
VOR dysfunction
difficulty reading, nystagmus
Otolith
calcium carbonate structure in saccual or utrical
Saccual
senses linear movements in vertical plain (up/down)
Utrical
senses linear movements in horizontal movements (back/forward)
Otoconia
crystals/stones detect motion - normally rest on gelatinous bed in semicircular canals (can be dislodged/move - cause dizziness)
Ampulla
provides sense of spatial orientation (small bulge/space on each of the semicircular canals - contains the cupulla)
Anterior semicircular canal
Sense angular acceleration: head nodding yes
Posterior semicircular canal
Sense angular acceleration: lateral flexion, head extension
Lateral semicircular canal
Sense angular acceleration: head shaking no
Perilymph
lubricates/surrounds vestibular structures
Endolymph
fluid inside vestibular structures (semiciruclar canals/otolith)
Kinocilia
hair structures which detect movement in the inner ear
Vertigo
symptom, sensation of moving/spinning, ranges from barely noticeable to interfering w/balance and task performance
BPPV - benign paroxysmal positional vertigo
otoconia in places it shouldn’t be
Canalithiasis
BPPV - otoconia floating in one or more of the semicircular canals
Cupilolithiasis
BPPV - otoconia stuck in the cupula
What vestibular dysfucntion looks like
history of falls, dizziness/light headedness, headaches
fractures
poor balance
motion sickness
difficulty w/amusement park rides, flying, being on a boat
nausea
difficulty reading or tracking
Vestibular system impairment signs/symptoms
Nystagmus Tinnitus Vertigo Hearing loss Loss of balance, possible falls broad-based stance sweating, nausea, vomiting
Components of balance
Postural - orientation, equilibrium, stability
Diagnostic positioning for Posterior canal BPPV
Dix-Hallpike
Diagnostic positioning for Anterior canal BPPV
Dix-Hallpike
Neck extension
Diagnostic positioning for Lateral canal BPPV
Supine Roll test
