Swallowing stages Flashcards
Pre-Oral phase
moves food/liquid to the mouth
Oral Preparatory phase
oral structures form bolus by tasting, chewing, manipulation, and containment
Oral phase
1 second - begins when bolus is in the mouth, ends when bolus enters the pharynx
Pharyngeal phase
1 second - begins when bolus enters the pharynx, ends when bolus enters the esophagus
Esophageal phase
8-20 seconds - begins when bolus enters the esophagus, ends when bolus enters the stomach
Pre-Oral interventions
ROM to bring utensil to the mouth
Strength to hold utensils
Energy conservation
Motivation to eat
Oral Preparatory interventions
Support for cheek or jaw for efficient breakdown of food
Strength/ROM of oral structures
Postural stability to optimize eating
Oral interventions
Cold/sour bolus for slow oral transit times - encourages swallowing
Positional changes - chin tuck
Pharyngeal interventions
further training/specialization required
Esophageal interventions
Team decisions for safety/comfort of client
