Power
the ability to do something in a particular way (control; authority)
Politics
the struggles between individuals/groups to wield power
- persuasive, sharper of worlds
- division by design
- without politics, there is no “spice”
Sovereignty
ability of nation-states to carry out actions/policies within a territory independent of internal/external factors
Policy
a course or principle of action adopted/proposed by a gov./party, business, or individual
- EX: throwing the bullet not shooting it
Empirical
based on/concerned/verifiable by observation or experience rather than theory or pure logic
- sensory knowledge/experience
- foundation of modern science, research, gov.
Quantitative
- data using statistics focused on numeric values
- allows for measurement of variables
- faster but broad generalizations
- GOAL: gather large amounts of info
Qualitative
- the “why” and “how” of qualitative data
- considers the culture/history
- smaller sample sizes, slower, deeper meaning
- GOAL: to gather the story and create a larger narrative
