Human Development Index
a summary measure of average achievement in 3 key dimensions of human development
1. life expectancy (long and healthy)
2. being knowledgeable (schooling)
3. standard of living (gross national income per capita)
GDP (Gross Domestic Product)
the value of all final goods and services produced in a country
IMPORTANT: (Real) GDP is the broadest measure of economic activity and the principal indicator of economic performance
GDP Per Capita
a measure of a country’s economic output that accounts for the total population
- GDP / Population
- seen as an indicator of “standard of living” but doesn’t account for the cost of living
PPP (Purchasing Power Parity)
determines how much $$$ would be needed to purchase the same good/service in 2 countries (foreign exchange rate)
PROBLEMS:
- PPP is more favored than GDP
- doesn’t account for the value a country brings to international trade/commerce
- not a true 1:1
GDP Growth Rate
the increase or improvement in the inflation-adjusted market value of goods/services in a financial year
GINI Index
an economic measurement to show income or wealth inequality
0 (perfect equality) - 1 (perfect inequality)
Freedom House
conduct research on and advocate for democracy, political freedom, and human rights
0 (smallest degree of freedom - 4(largest degree of freedom)
Transparency Index
ranks countries/territories around the world by their perceived levels of public sector corruption
0 (highly corrupt) - 100 (very clean)
Fragile/Failed State Index
annual report gauging the vulnerability/susceptibility
- 4 categories: cohesion, economic, political, social
0 (most stable) - 10 (least stable)
