what is vertigo ?
sensation of dizziness and can be a symptom of a number of different conditions. It may be accompanied with nausea and a loss of balance.
Causes
Motion sickness
Viral labyrinthitis - Labyrinthitis is a condition that affects the inner ear, causing dizziness, nausea, and hearing loss
Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BBPV) - The sensation of spinning with certain head movements as a result of a problem in the inner ear.
Meniere’s disease -A rare disorder of the inner ear that causes episodes of vertigo, the sensation of spinning. It also leads to hearing problems.
Management of symptoms involves
Prochlorperazine - OTC - It is used in treatment of dizziness and problems with balance, the treatment of nausea and vomiting, and to ease agitation and severe restlessness and schizophrenia.
Cinnarizine - RX/OTC - It can treat travel sickness, symptoms caused by balance or movement problems such as vertigo, tinnitus and ménière’s disease.
Cyclizine - RX - It can treat sickness caused by balance or movement problems such as vertigo, travel sickness, and problems affecting the inner ear.
Promethazine - RX/OTC - It can treat allergic conditions such as hay fever, and is used to prevent sickness (nausea). Also used as a sedative.
