Otitis Media with Effusion ( Glue Ear ) - middle ear condition Flashcards
What is Otitis media with effusion
Can be described as accumulation of fluid with the middle of the ear without signs of infection . Glue ear can develop after an episode of otitis media
Causes of Glue Ear
Occurs when the Eustachian tube is narrow , blocked or the valves of the tube do not open actively.
The middle ear fills with fluid which over time becomes thicker and reduces vibrations of the ear drum and ossicles in the middle ear. This may be visible as bubbles behind the ear drum when performing otoscopy.
Presenting Symptoms
Reduced Hearing which can lead to speech and development problems in young children.
Potential tinnitus and balance issues
Earache and systemic upset such as fever are not usual
Risk factors associated with the development of glue ear
Age
Genetics
Episode of acute otitis media
Exposure to smoking or pollution
Reflux Disease
Typical Management
Watchful waiting. Spontaneous resolution of the condition is common
Auto inflation exercises to ventilate the middle ear.
Surgical insertion of a grommet in the ear drum to maintain middle ear ventilation. It is safely expelled from the ear 6-12 months after insertion
