What is conjunctivitis ?
Also known as pink eye

could be bacterial or viral
Signs and symptoms of conjunctivitis
Eyes difficult to open with a sticky discharge indicates bacterial conjunctivitis
Redness, watering and gritty sensation indicates Viral conjunctivitis
Unilateral or bilateral
Treatment of viral conjunctivitis
Prescribe a topical antihistamine. Eg Xylometazoline - P med
Dual action mast cell stabilizer. Eg sodium cromoglycate - POM
Mast cell stabilizer - azelastine - POM
Treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis
Chloramphenicol eye drops - otc
Fusidic Acid - POM
What is HSV ?
An infection caused by the virus HSV. There are two types of Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV): HSV-1 -usually causes blisters around the mouth and lips. HSV-2 - usually causes blisters around the genitals and rectum
Symptoms of HSV
Acute red eye
Eye pain
Photophobia
Tearing / redness
Blurred vision
Skin rash near the eye lid
Treatment of HSV
Treatment should start as soon as possible
Aciclovir eye drops - POM
Antibacterial eye drops - POM
