- 700,000 men had fallen .
- The French led by GENERAL PÉTAIN held out but barely.
- Germans had more resources so slightly better off.

A
- Bloodiest battle
- 700,000 dead
- French lost many ( close to breaking point)

Why did the Germans think that Verdun was such a significant place to attack?
A
It would be a large defensive battle for a purely defensive war.

How was new tech put to use during the BOV?
A
- 80,000 artillery shells.
- Flamethrowers trapped many French in bunkers and incinerated them alive.
- Trucks were the only connec. between the war &civil.
- Aerolanes advanced for superior tech(both sides)
- Sandbags+machine guns

- Fought bravely
- Burned alive- had never seen FT b4.
- Deaf because of the gunshots.
- Didn’t want to be killed but just dead.
