What were reserve trenches like?
Wider than front line trenches, more spacious, messy with lots of stuff on the ground.
What were the front lines like?
- Narrow, tight, you would get very little sleep
- Millions of men + horses, life.
- hot,dusty and smelly
What were trenches like?
- Intricate and later evolved to have tanks and machine guns.
- rain? Flood=trench foot
- Separated by nomans land
- Protection from snipers, artillery attacks etc
- Barnes wire in front
What would artillery attacks means?
Huge cannons firing shells of explosives
What happens by 1914 November?
Deadlock.
- The BEF had major Casual. And the FRENCH had APPROX 1 MILLION dead/wounded within 10 WEEKS.
- Lots of troops were dug into trenches that stretched sea=> alps

What did the INFANTRY do?
They’d have to follow cavalry and take charge of the captured positions

Infantry= foot

What was the cavalry charge replaced by?
“Infantry charge”. This became the main tactic
Describe the stages of an ATTACK?
1)Artillery bombards enemy’s Front Line. BARRAGE.
2) B stops=> over the top. Race against defen. WHO CAN SET MACHINE GUNS FASTER?
3)Defenders norm. Have pro= sweep em with MG fire or crossF.
4) Go through? HOLD THEM.
Generally imposs coz forced back.
What did the infantry need to do? EXPLAIN
- Dig new trenches, repair old, bring supplies and equipm to comm trenches.
- Patrol nomans land , raid enemy trenches, capture prisoners
Some soldiers In the front line would have secret listening posts.. They would dig under the enemy , place mines and were called..
They were usually ..
1) Near enemy trenches.
2) Sappers.
3) Ex miners
