Main verbs
identify the action of the sentence e.g she SINGS like a hyena.
Auxiliary verbs
go before the main verb in a sentence. They give extra information about the main verb and can affect the meaning of the sentence.
Primary auxiliary
Do, have and be
Modal auxiliary
Can only occur with reference to a main verb. - Can, could, will, would, must, may, might, shall and should.
Dynamic material verbs
usually describe actions we can take, or things that can happen.
Stative verbs
refer to a state or condition which is not changing or likely to change.
Active voice
when the subject is in focus and performs the action described by the verb. E.G Sally kicked the ball
Passive voice
less direct, it focusses on the object and the order changes so that the object comes first, followed by the subject. E.G. The ball was kicked by Sally.
Intransitive verbs
No object: The door opened onto a tube-shaped ball.
Transitive verbs
Requires an object: He opened the DOOR with a jerk.
