are very short words which help to express relationships, especially to do with time, place and direction. e.g: in, on, at, to, for, by, with, from, under, over, round, below, above, near, after, before, since, until, till.

two- or three-word phrases which function in the same way as a simple preposition: According to, as well as, except for, in favour of, ahead of, apart from, near to, in spite of, because of, in addition to and on behalf of.
