Circumstantiality
Before getting to the point or answering a question the person gets caught up in countless details and explanations
Clang associations
Where one word follows next based on only rhyming
“I want to say the play of the day rat stay may I pay”
Echolalia
Repeating the speech of another
Nurse- “tell me your name”
Patient- “tell me your name”
Tangentiality
Person goes off topic and mostly doesnt return
E.g ask about family but talk about animals cars and boats
Perseveration
Involuntary repetition of the same thought phrase or motor response to different questions or situations
Associated with brain damage
Word salad
Mixture of word and phrases that have no meaning together
E.g i am fine apple pie no sale furniture store take it slow cellar door
Thought blocking
Sudden blank thoughts in a middle of a sentence. Person is unable to continue train of thought
Neologism
Words a person makes up that only have meaning for the person themselves.
Often part of a delusional system
Flight of ideas
Constant flow of speech where person jumps from one topic to the other rapidly. There is a connection between topics although hard to connect
Characteristically seen in manic state
Looseness of association
Thinking is haphazard illogical and confused. connections in though are interrupted.
Seen mostly in schizophrenic disorder
