The White Belt
The white belt is given to beginning students. When a new student enters a school, or dojang, the instructor teaches him or her a few basic rules and formalities and allows the student to wear a white belt. White is a symbol of purity, innocence and a blank slate. Since the color white can be absorbed by any and every color of the spectrum, the white belt symbolizes the ability to acquire knowledge.
The Yellow Belt
The second level is the yellow belt. The color yellow is associated with the sun. When a plant first starts to sprout from the earth, it is yellow before turning green. The yellow belt comes before the green belt and represents a time of growth. At this level, the student learns the basics of Taekwondo and lays the foundation of the sport. If the foundation is strong, the student will be strong. If the foundation is weak, the student will have to strength basic skills before moving ahead.
The Green Belt
The student who earns a green belt is like a plant in full bloom. The leaves of the plant, which are open and ready to absorb energy, grow larger and stronger. Even more important, the green plant is full of life and bends with the wind. Its strength lies in its flexibility. In this phase of training, the student continues to build his or her knowledge and learn new techniques. These new skills are the foundation for the advanced techniques required of blue and red belts.
The Blue Belt
Blue is the color of the sky to which the plant grows toward, and like water which flows and changes just as the blue belt student changes. Water adapts to the shape of its container, takes on the characteristics of the container that holds it, and the blue belt student is equally adaptable. This also is a period of growth and adjustment. It is the time during which the student fills the container with knowledge.
The Red Belt
Red is the color of fire, danger and intensity. The red belt student who has the knowledge of all preceding belts must learn to control his or her fire and intensity. The danger lies in the amount of knowledge the red belt has and how he or she chooses to harness it. The red belt should use his or her fire to build strength, knowledge and intensity.
The Black Belt
Black is the color of outer space - empty, bottomless and infinite. It was chosen as the color of the final belt for its ability to absorb all other colors. The holder of a black belt has absorbed all the knowledge of the colored belts. The person who has earned a Black Belt has mastered all the requirements of the Taekwondo system of training. This is not to say that the Black Belt is the end of the road, but it is the end of the first stage of the journey.
