What’s “Simple Present” used to express?
“Simple Present” is used to express both events happening now and “eternal” states or frequent events.
GMAT typically prefers the simple tense, unless the sentence clearly requires one of the more complex tenses discussed.
When the more complex tenses are used?
The complex tenses each have particular circumstances in which they can be used; if those circumstances do not exist, then don’t use a complex tense.
When is “Past Perfect” tense used?
If two actions in a sentence occured at different times in the past, you can use the Past Perfect tense for _the earlier actio_n and simple past tense for the later action.
When the meaning of a sentence is already clear, the correct answer may or may not use past perfect to indicate an earlier action.
When is “Present Perfect” tense used?
The Present Perfect tense is used for actions that started in the past but continue into the present or remain true.
The present perfect tense effectively has one foot in the past and one foot in the present.

Comma -ing modifiers adopt the tense of the main working verb to which they are attached.
