Ventricular system Flashcards
Fill in the gaps
Give the CSF flow through the ventricles
- Flows from the body of the lateral ventricles
- Through the interventricular foramen of monroe
- Into the 3rd ventricle
- Through cerebral aqueduct
- Into the 4th ventricle
- Has 3 apertures which allow it to disperse into subarachnoid space (x2 lateral apertures and 1x median aperture)
Where can the lateral ventricles be found?
Within cerebral hemisphere
Where can the 3rd ventricle be found
Between thalami
Where can the 4th ventricle be found
Between pons + cerebellum
What is the Choroid plexus
A network of blood vessels in each ventricle of the brain that produces CSF
How is CSF produced
Produced in ventricles of brain by the passing of blood through tiny fenestrated capillaries within the subarachnoid space
What do the plexus allow
Allow filtered blood plasma to be transferred to CSF and deposited within ventricles
Describe CSF obstruction
- CSF accumulates upstream of a blockage
- The ventricles begin to swell and there’s ‘water on the brain’ - the abdomen and head swell
- To resolve a shunt can be placed for CSF drainage
Describe the production and function of the CSF
Production - In the choroid plexus, about 500ml a day
Functions - Buoyancy, cushioning affect from trauma, transport of substances and provides stable environment
