Circle of willis Flashcards
What is the meaning of anastomosis
Alternative channels for the blood to flow through
What can the posterior communicating artery do that the anterior communicating artery cannot
The posterior communicating artery can provide a back up if one gets occluded, the anterior communicating artery cannot do that
Fill in the gaps
What do the middle cerebral arteries supply
- Frontal, temporal and parietal parts of the brain
What does PICA supply
Posterior of the cerebellum
What does AICA supply
Anterior of the cerebellum
What do the posterior cerebral arteries supply
Underside of brain + occipital
What does the anterior cerebral artery supply
- Superior and medial areas of frontal and parietal lobes
- Corpus callosum
What deficits can be seen if the anterior cerebral artery is occluded
- Primary motor areas of feet + legs affected as well as general sensory
- Also in control of high order thinking and impulse rational, affect motor functions of lower limbs and personality change, impulsive behaviour
What areas of the brain does the middle cerebral artery supply
Lateral areas of frontal, temporal and parietal lobes
What deficits can be seen if the middle cerebral artery is occluded
- If proximal route is occluded, lose supply to broccas area, primary somatosensory, primary motor areas and the frontal eye field
What areas of the brain does the posterior cerebral artery supply
- Occipital lobe
- Inferior and medial surface of temporal lobe
What deficits can be seen if the posterior cerebral artery is occluded
Damage leads to visual deficit or difficulty. to interpret images
