Venous Drainage & CSF (Mixed) Flashcards
1
Q
Describe noncommunicating hydrocephalus
A
Often due to a blocked cerebral aqueduct
The ventricles dilates, increase intracranial pressure and flattening the gyri agains the skull
In children their head may enlarge
2
Q
Describe communicating hydrocephalus
A
NOT due to a blockage, rather due to a thickening of the arachnoid space from trauma/infection with reduced absorptoin
If the pressure increase the spinal canal may enlarge
3
Q
Describe normal pressure hydrocephalus
A
When the CSF pressure doesn’t increase but too much is present
This often occurs in the elderly and can affect gain as well as cause incontinence and dementia
