venipuncture Flashcards
what does plasma do
- transports ~~ nutrients, hormones, medications, and other substances to cells
- carrie’s waste products away from cells to kidneys, liver, ect for excretion
- transports some gases (co2 and traces of o2)
- plasma = clotting factor (fibrinogens) = serum NO RBC WBC PLATELETS
what do RBC’s do
RED BLOOD CELLS
- cells carry 02
- made up of hemoglobin which gives the red appearance
- more RBCs = more o2
hemolysis
- rupture of RBC membrane
- have to redraw when this happens
what do WBCs do
WHITE BLOOD CELLS
- immunity
- body’s defense system
- infection/inflammation signal bone marrow to produce and release more WBCs
what does Leukemia refer to
leukemia is an increase in malignant WBCs that are unable to fight infection and impair the production of RBCs and platelets
what are platelets
- clotting
- fragments of cytoplasm with a strong tendency to adhere to eachother
- undergo chemical and physical reactions with fibrinogen and other factors to form clots
hemophilia
clotting disorder due to insufficient clotting factors
