veins and arteries Flashcards
what do veins do ?
bring blood into heart
what does the vena cava do ?
carries deoxygenated blood from body to right atrium
what does the pulmonary vein do ?
carries oxygenated blood from the lungs tot he left atrium
what do arteries do ?
bring blood away from heart
what does the pulmonary artery do?
carries deoxygenated from the right ventricle to lungs
what does the aorta do ?
caries oxygenated blood from the left ventricle to the rest of the body
describe arteries muscle layer ?
thicker than veins so that constriction and dilation can occur to control volume of blood
describe arteries elastic layer ?
thicker to help maintain blood pressure ,walls can stretch and recoil in response to heart beat
describe arteries wall thickness?
thicker than veins to help prevent the vessels bursting due to high pressure
do arteries have valves?
no
atrioles have a muscle layer ?
thicker than arteries to help restrict blood flow into the capillaries
arterioles elastic layer?
thinner than in arteries as the pressure is lower
arterioles wall thickness?
thinner as pressure is slightly lower
do arterioles have valves ?
no
veins muscle layer?
relativley thin so it cannot control the blood flow
veins elastic layer?
relativley thin as the pressure is much lower
veins wall thickness?
thin as the pressure is much lower so the is low risk of bursting .the thinness means the vessels are easily flattened ,which helps the flow of blood up to the heart
do veins have valves?
yes
do capillaries have valves?
no
capilliaries muscle layer?
no
capillaries elastic layer ?
no
capillaries wall thickness ?
one cell thick consisting of only a lining layer .This provides a short diffusion distance for exchanging materials between the blood and the cells.
where does the renal artery carry blood from and to ?
aorta ->kidney
where does the renal vein carry blood from and too ?
kidneys->vena cava
