Digestion and absorbtion Flashcards
why is digestion important ?
so large molecules can be broken down into smaller molecules and absorbed into the gut
what reaction breaks molecules down ?
hydrolysis
how does a hydrolysis reaction break down a molecule ?
adds 1 water molecule for each bond
what enzymes break down carbohydrates ?
membrane bound diassacharide and amylase
what does amylase catalyse ?
the breakdown of starch
what is starch
long chains of 2 alpha glucose molecules
how does amylase break down starch ?
Amylase works by catalysing
hydrolysis reactions that break the glycosidic bonds in starch to produce maltose (a disaccharide)
where is amylase produces and released?
Amylase is produced by the salivary glands, which release amylase into the mouth, and also by the pancreas,
which releases amylase into the small intestine
what are membrane bound diassaccharides ?
enzymes that are attached to the cell membranes of epithelial cells lining the ileum. They break down diassaccharides into monosaccharides , using hydrolysis reactions to break glyscosidic bonds
what does sucrose break down into ?
monosaccharides glucose and fructose.
