Vein Disorders Flashcards
increase in venous pressure (superficial veins) seen in obese and pregnant patients
varicose veins
venous stasis, edema, pain and thrombosis
varicose veins
new Rx for varicose veins
laser ablation surgery
dilated veins
varices
due to portal hypertension and associated w/ liver cirrhosis
esophageal varices
due to prolonged pelvic pressure
hemorrhoids
what drains small intestine into liver
superior and inferior mesenteric veins
why sleepy after eating lunch
brain trying to sleep and divert energy to gut to breakdown food to go to liver
causes blood supply coming to liver to back up along curvature of stomach and esophageal veins, and become esophageal varices
liver cirrhosis
hemorrhoids where feel pressure, no pain
above pectineal line
hemorrhoids where feel pain
below pectineal line
esophageal varices
thrombosis and inflammation of deep leg veins
thrombophlebitis/Phleothrombosis
presents w/ erythema, edema, painful to touch on leg
deep vein thrombosis
what are you worried about w/ DVT
pulmonary embolus
overweight smoker on plane w/ sclerosis
worried about pulmonary embolism
bedrest and sitting on plane overseas can lead to this
DVT
pain elicited by pressure over the affected vein, squeezing the calf, or forced dorsiflexion of foot
Homan sign (DVT)
how do you die with pulmonary embolism?
obstructed pulm. trunk
backup of flow to R heart
balloons out (thin wall)
fatal arrythmia
arrows pointing to
veins (both have DVT)
where can the worst PE happen
in b/t R and L pulmonary arteries at base of trunk
(saddle embolus)
R to L flow that goes through the atriums into systemic circulation and to brain and stroke out and die
paradoxical emboli
many clots (venous thrombi) due to cancer; paraneoplastic syndrome
Troussea sign (migratory thrombophlebitis)
obstruction of either SVC or IVC due to some sort of cancer
SVC or IVC syndrome
ex. lung cancer compressing SVC; leading to distension of jugular veins and red hue of face
SVC syndrome
ex. cancer in lung
SVC syndrome
ex. cancer in liver
IVC syndrome
vascular congestion of the ear, will lose it in 24 hours, what do you do
use leeches
draws out blood and veins have time to grow and anastamose
