Vehicle Disentanglement Flashcards
Airbags Rule?
newer system have energy storage feature
5-10-20
5” side
10” Driver
20” passenger
-this applies to air bags that have been deployed, as well….make be a 2nd DEPLOYMENT
Seatbelt Pretensioners?
-designed to reduce blunt force trauma as well as impact with airbags
-mechanically or electrically activated/spring mechanism or pyrotechnic
-mechanically activated will remain live even after battery disconnect…
removal of seatbelt to patient AS SOON AS PRACTICAL is recommended
Tempered glass?
-being replaced on rear, side windows by LAMINATED GLASS OR RIGID PLASTICS–highly resistant to breaking
Many new design vehicles have airbag components mounted in seats upholstery?
avoid cutting through air bag sensors, good practice is to remove upholstery PRIOR to cutting
-stronger seats, harder to displace
Automatic roll over protection systems?
- stowed behind seats in convertibles/rear deck area
- risk to members operating with accidental deployment
- disconnect battery and avoid deployment path
- some newer vehicles, system can be MANUALLY DEPLOYED, THIS IS A GOOD MOVE
Batteries in many different locations?
hood, wheel well, under seats, trunk
-some vehicles have more than one battery
First arriving Officer must———when person is pinned?
IMMEDIATELY NOTIFY DISPATCHER
additional units required?
ems/rescue
Transmit a 10-75 for ?
SEVERAL VEHICLES WITH—
NUMEROUS PATIENTS
considerations: electrical wires/gasoline
- type of vehicles/number and type of injruies
- secondary accident considerations
Disentanglement?
removal of WRECKAGE from around victim
- protect victim with blanket
- members cognizant of operating too close to victims
- least amount of victim movement/fewest secondary injuries
Extrication?
PHYSICAL REMOVAL OF THE VICTIM from the vehicle
- power unit in front or rear
- spreaders and cutters tool of choice
- always be in control of tool
- NEVER position any part of your body, between the tool and the vehicle
Engine Company?
divided into 2 teams
-Officer and 2 members- CFRD-collar and trauma bag)
-remaining members stretch and charge precautionary line - consider foam handline
when fire/hazardous condition exits upon arrival, stretching and charging hoseline is PARAMOUNT
Ladder Company Ops?
guide and should be evaluated by Officer at roll call
-Officer/Inside team- proceed to accident and initiate perimeter survey, CHOCK VEHICLE AND GAIN ACCESS TO VICTIM- ensure car is in PARK, WINDOWS ARE OPENED, SEATS ARE MOVED BACK AND SEATBELTS REMOVED, BEFORE!! shutting down ignition
Roof/Ov-bring Hurst tool and initiate operation
Chauffeur-initially use apparatus to block traffic/additional equipment
Officer ENSURE DISCONNECTION OF BATTERY…NEGATIVE FIRST
Vehicle Stabilization?
- goal prevent rocking of vehicle
- place step chocks, shut down engine, engage parking brake, putting transmission into park and disconnecting battery
- in addition to step chock and wedges, ropes, chains, hook, halligan can be used
Two rules always considered?
- vehicles are stabilized, AS THEY ARE FOUND
- NEVER right a vehicle with a VICTIM INSIDE
Before any stabilization methods are taken?
check under vehicle for victims
Place chocks?
behind front wheels and in front of rear wheels, STEP SIDE DOWN
- don’t interfere with door swing
- snug to rocker panel
- wedge may be used
further stabilization..deflate tires…vise grips or pliers to remove stems…KEEP IN MIND, once this is done, you will be UNABLE TO REPOSITION CHOCKS
Vehicles on side or roof?
- place chocks under side of car/tires
- no member should enter until stabilized
- good choice of entry/FRONT /REAR WINDOW
Removing Door?
- nader pin/staple or hinge side
- victim protected…window open/or glass removed
- newer cars- HINGE SIDE
When a hinge has a spring?
remove prior to cutting
cut TOP HINGE FIRST
-cut door stop when present
Vertical crush?
-room permits, place one arm of the spreaders in the vehicle between victim and door, keep other arm outside of vehicle…THIS METHOD WILL NOT WORK WHEN VICTIM IS TOO CLOSE TO DOOR
Vertical Push?
- roof MUST BE INTACT
- works bets on older vehicles
3rd door removal?
-used when a victim is pinned in the back seat of a 2 door vehicle, 3rd door will provide better access
- 4 cuts:
- Top B post
- Bottom of B post
- Vertical cut rear of quarter panel
- Horizontal cut rear quarter panel at the rocker panel
after 4 cuts are made-insert spreaders on an angle , midway
Roof Removal?
Total Roof Removal:
- cut low on A post/high on B, C D with cutter
- when cutting A/D, cut portion of windshield and rear window to allow access to gut the glass, if necessary
- cut all posts one side/then opposite-pass tool
- cut across BOTTOM of windshield using SAWZALL, with wood blade..end cut on A post on both sides of vehicle..life roof
Roof Removal: all cuts at same locations for total…WINDSHIELD DOEST NOT HAVE TO BE CUT.
-after cuts..lift and walk towards front..fold roof onto hood of car
Dashboard displacement?
- stabilize vehicle- chock under rocker panel
- 2 cuts bottom portion of A post
- lower cut is made below the hinge, parallel to rocker panel
- 2nd cut/6-8 inches above first cut
- 3rd cut-low on upper portion of A post
Glass Removal?
laminated-windshields
tempered-sides/rear—being replaced with laminated glass/plastic
-only glass necessary should be removed
-avoid inhaling dust and particles from glass
victim/rescuers protected from glass-salvage plastic/yellow blankets…fabric not a good choice
-protect eyes/hands
Windshield- windshield saw, sawzall, axe…AXE, LAST RESORT
side/rear windows-center punch or halligan can be used to break tempered glass…halliagn-insert between door frame and glass and exert downward pressure
Vehicle on side?
Access from front or rear window when roof is intact
Alternate method-cutting open in roof- AIR CHISEL
Vehicle on roof
Access via front or rear window when roof intact
door removal can be accomplished ( not when vehicle is in side)attack HINGE SIDE
Area of safety?
full opened length and width of JAWS must be maintained
Point couplings ..
DOWN…always use hand/eye protection when disconnecting /connecting
Spreaders/cutters?
TOP HINGE FIRST
Rear end collisions…?
mAY NOT ACTIVATE SAFETY SYSTEMS
Avoid cutting/crushing areas that may contain live AIRBAGS…
removing interior trim inside of a vehicle,, might help in determining the locations of these devices
Hydraulic hoselines may be…?
coupled and uncoupled with POWER UNIT RUNNING…provided bypass valve is in backward or dump position
members get hydraulic fluid in eyes..?
flush with clean water for 20 minutes and immediately seek medical attention
