Emergencies 3-BASIC EMERGENCIES Flashcards
CLOCKWISE…used to close, makeup or TIGHTEN the following:
Water valves in faucets (usually) screws nuts pressur cylinders /oxygen/propane sprinkler systems, water mains
Counterclockwise?
hydrant operating nut CLOSE
hydrant STREET SHUT OFF CLOSE
Toilet Bowl leaking?
ball in water tank raised to stop flow
Or
under tank- shut off handle …turn clockwise
Leaking sink?
handle under sink/clockwise
Removing Toilet Bowl, will provide?
Drainage
Location of WATER SHUTOFF?
A. sometimes shut off is located on the wall near the ceiling of the apartment directly below
B. shut off are also located on the riser line of apartments in basements
C. Where MAIN ENTERS BUILDING: usually near FRONT BUILDING WALL(often in corner)
- COLDEST pipe in building and may have CONDENSATION on outside
- listen for sound of running water
- feel VIBRATION
- look for ARMORED GROUND CABLE which may be attached to main from electric meter
- once valve is located shut off clockwise
HOUSE MAIN:
-MALLEABLE PIPe -strike with maul or flat head axe or insert round end of stick , chock , pencil
Flooded Roof:
NEVER CLEAR BLOCKAGE WITH HANDS
-use as FEW MEMBERS AS PRACTICAL on the roof
each sq ft over 12” deep, weighs 62 pounds
- DO NOT clear any blockage with hands! (suction pressure can be high)
- clear blockage with 6 foot hook or applicable tool from drain or scupper
- USING HOSE: -stretch entire length under water and allow to fill
- KINK one end
- drape over edge over parapet extending below roof level
- release kink
booster line to roof- charge line and open nozzle/place under water/shut down pumps and disconnect line at street /allow to drain
Hydrant Shut down:
operating nut= counterclockwise
STREET SHUT DOWN- remove plate
- clean out debris with water
- wrench on fitting (counterclockwise 17 times)
note: nut usually found off center on street side of the chamber….about 12 turn will be noticeable decrease in flow
Steam Leak Radiator- Safety valve blown off:
shut down radiator flow at valve handle turning clockwise
REPLACE safety valve or use tapered wooden plug wrapped in cloth…tap in until secure
Flow valve Blown off (radiator)…
-genrally it will be nearby and undamaged
-make sure flow handle is in OPEN POSITION (IMPORTANT)
-replace fitting by turning nut on clockwise
NOTe: wear GLOVES..place towel over main valve to divert steam flow while resetting valve
-after restoration of flow valve it may be turned off or on as necessary —may use compound or sealant on threads
Note: may be necessary to shut steam off at boiler
Overhead Electrical Service Emergencies:
treat downed wires as LIVE until an ON SCEEN UTILITY COMPANY REP CONFIRMS that wires have been DE-ENGERGIZED…there is NO SAFE WAY for FD personnel to move energized power lines, even if it presents a condition imminently dangerous to life
members SHALL NOT TAKE ANY ACTION relating to removing electrical wires from people/vehicles until wires are de-energized by UTILIY COMPANY
DO NOT attempt to remove OCCUPANTS from vehicles in contact with wires until UTILITY COMPANY DE-ENERGIZED WIRES
DO NOT ATTEMPt to use hook or rope
Wires down IN THE STREET….immediately upon confirming that live electrical wires are down and are creating a situation that places human life in danger:
LIFE HAZARD
contact dispatcher via Dept. radio indicating life is in danger…specify location -ADDRESS/POLE NUMBER of downed wires..request forthwith POWER REMOVAL AND PRIORITY RESPONSE BY UTILITY COMPANY
-request Response of BC (BC will contact Utility Company Electrical Operations Center directly)
LIVE WIRES and NO imminent life hazard?
guard against hazards of fallen wires by ISOLATING AREA, notify UTILITY COMPANY and standby until a utility crew responds
In either situation( A. lives wires-life hazard/B. live wires-NO life hazard)…
Immediate notification to dispatch/Priority utility response
- ISOLATE AREA
- keep apparatus away
- check nearby buildings for heat at fuse box/electrical service entrance box/utilize TIC
- caution civilians in vehicles with live electrical wires over it to REMAIN in vehicle until de-energized by utility company
- stretch line with FOG NOZZLE..keep at least 25 feet away from any downed wire while operating this handline
**DO NOT OPEN HOUSE SERVICE (heated wires can generate CO)
FALLEN or hanging wires are NOT to be moved by members..
Ground immediately near a fallen wire may be energized
- do not place WEIGHTED OBJECTS on wires
- do not open house service
