Learning mindfulness would be considered an environmental influence on wellbeing This is because mindfulness techniques would be learnt from a person’s environment. It is not a hereditary factor as hereditary factors are biological influences on development that result from the genetic information that is passed from biological parents to their offspring
Compare whatever a psychologist or psychiatrist would be better to teach mindfulness and explain why in reference to them roles? ( 3 marks)
A psychologist would be more appropriate to teach someone how to practice mindfulness. This is because a psychologist can provide counselling and psychotherapy, including strategies for improving wellbeing, whereas A psychiatrist would not be as appropriate, as they manage the medical/biological treatment of a person’s mental ill-health.
Define the term neurotypical? (1 mark)
Neurotypical’ refers to individuals who have standard or typical brain functioning, processing and behaviours. Individual who thinks, acts and behaves in ways that are typical for most people.
Explain whatever there would be a critical period in development for learning how to practice mindfulness? (3 marks)
It is unlikely that there would be a critical period in development for learning how to practice mindfulness. Critical periods are specific periods in development during which the individual is most vulnerable to the absence of certain environmental stimuli or experiences. Learning to practice mindfulness can be achieved at any time over a person’s lifespan.
Identify one cognitive accomplishment of the formal operational stage of cognitive development? (1 mark)
An accomplishment in cognitive thinking within the formal operational stage (12+ years) would be
Abstract thinking which refers to individuals thinking about abstract concepts to solve problems.
Describe how an individual in the formal operational stage could experience mindfulness and compare this with someone within the sensorimotor stage? (2 marks)
An individual in the formal operational stage has the cognitive skills and the ability to think in an abstract way in comparison an individual in the sensorimotor stage has not yet acquired those skills and therefore will not be able to practice mindfulness.
