Gorgons Pursuing Perseus - Description
- Perseus fleeing the gorgons (steno & Euryle) having beheaded Medusa
- two gods present on the left of the vase:
- Athene, not wearing battle gear but identifiable cause favoured Perseus
- AND Hermes, with caduceus and travelling hat
orientalising presented on the body of the vase: exotic beasts, panthers + oriental motifs - On the other side a different story presented
- two figures – Herakles + Kyknos fighting
- flanked by Chariots and charioteers: Iolas – Herakles’ companion + Phobos – Kyknos’s half brother
- typical Archaic dinos – banding = main story at the top and others decorated (boasts, motifs, palmettes & geometric patterning)
Gorgons Pursuing Perseus - Successful
- chronology - falling beheaded Medusa is further back in banding than sisters who pursue
- aspect of variety within the characters - Medusa falling
- a basic attempt at movement, but progress from geometric
- an attempt at calf muscles is fairly good
- fine detail of etching on wing and him of dresses
Gorgons Pursuing Perseus - UNsuccessful aspects
- movement highly stylised and unrealistic - legs too far apart, angles of knees = unnatural
- pose not ideal on some - chest frontal, legs profile = Archaic
- typically wide, staring, almond eyes - long noses
- braided hair – eye IN nose
- fingers = long sticks, not proportional to hand
- two different, seemingly unrelated stories being told (Perseus looks like he is running to chariots but not related)
- multiple banding draws attention away from main band + story
- placement of main story on top band means you lose some narrative because of slope of Dinos’ neck
Sophilos Dinos - Description
- Peleus & Thetis wedding
- split into bands: exotic and mythological creatures, palmettes + orientalising, then story band
- Peleus stands in front of his house and holds out a kantharos to the procession
- first goddess we see is iris ( the four goddesses)
- then Dionysus (Peleus looking at) w/ vine laden with grapes = joys to come
Come in pairs:
- Zeus + Hera – holding veil in marital gesture
- Apollo + Hermes – Apollo had lyre and mouth open = singing, joys
- Poseidon + Amphitrite, Athene + Artemis – virgins, Oceanus + Teithys, Hebe + Cheiron etc
- Cheiron, centaur who becomes Achilles’ tutor
- Eileithyia, goddess of childbirth: Functional aspect of marriage, child will be future hero (Achilles)
- Hephaestus at the rear riding on a mule

Ajax & Achilles playing dice - Description
- Achilles & Ajax sit opposite each other
- Achilles has greek word for 4 and Ajax that for 3 = Achilles winning - like speech bubble
- detail on drapery
- Achilles looks most battle ready with helet
- but Ajax holds his spear tight and feet slightly off the ground - tension
- the skill of Exekias is shown in shape of vase
- lines or spears to handles to shield and loops
- centres attention
Ajax & Achilles playing dice - Successful aspects
- choice of the peaceful moment in war = innovative
Ajax & Achilles playing dice - UNsuccessful aspects

lies at ease holding a drinking horn
covered by white sail above which hangs grapevines - 7 clusters of grapes hand down
