Vascular System Flashcards
1
Q
What are the lymphatic organs?
A
Lymph nodes, bone marrow, spleen, thymus
2
Q
Arteries structure and function
A
Arteries → arterioles → capillaries
Carry oxygenated blood to the tissues (red)
High pressure, high flow rates, thick vessel wall
3
Q
Veins structure and function
A
Capillaries → Venuoles → Veins
Carry deoxygenated blood to the lungs (blue)
Low pressure, Venous valves, thin vessel wall, storage of blood
4
Q
Pericytes
A
Stabilise capillary structure and are important for vessel formation. Have basal membrane and long pseudopods
5
Q
Vascular same cell lineage (vSMC)
A
- cover large vessels
- form a separate layer to vascular wall
- complete coverage of endothelial surface
- contractile cells regulate vSMC contraction
6
Q
Lymphatic capillary structure
A
- flat endothelial cells without basal lamina → highly permeable
- found everywhere except: spleen, cartilage, pulp, nervous system, bone marrow
7
Q
Lymphatics structure
A
- formed by association of lymphatic capillaries
- vessel wall like veins (+ valves)
- low pressure in the mediastinum (inter pleural space)
8
Q
Glymphatic system
A
Lymphatic system of the brain:
- managed by glia cells
- moves cerebrospinal fluid, waste and immune cells
