Vascular Shunt And The Regulation Of Heart Rate During Exercise And Recovery Flashcards
Define Vascular Shunt
The redistribution of Cardiac Output during exercise
What do chemoreceptors do
Detect Changes in blood acidity
What do Baroreceptors Do
Detect changes in blood pressure
What do proprioceptors do
Detect changes in muscular activity
What is the Vasomoter control centre
It is situated in the brain and controls the vascular shunt mechanism
What does sympathetic simulation do
Controls the diameter of the arterioles and pre capillary sphincters
What are pre capillary sphincters
A small muscle at the junction between arterioles and capillaries which can vasoconstrict/ vasodilate
What is vasodilation
The widening of arterioles and pre capillary sphincters
What is vasoconstriction
The narrowing of arterioles and pre capillary sphincters
Describe the 4 stages of the vascular shunt mechanism during exercise
1) Chemoreceptors detect a change in PH, Baroreceptors detect an increase in blood pressure, Proprioreceptors detecy an increase in muscle activity
2) The information gets sent to the VCC
3) The VCC increases sympathetic stimulation of arterioles and pre capillary sphincters going to the organs which causes vasodilation and less blood flow
4) The VCC decrease sympathetic stimulation of arterioles and pre capillary sphincters going to the working muscles causing vasoconstriction and more blood flow
