pathophysiology of vascular dementia
A
progressive loss of brain function due to poor blood flow long term to the brain
- typically due to a series of strokes
- neurons are only able to function in aerobic conditions where there is constant oxygen and glucose supply
- Atherosclerosis -> chronic ischaemia -> necrosis of brain tissue

symptoms of vascular dementia depending on part of the brain that is affected

- Temporal lobe stroke - difficulty with memory
- Parietal lobs stroke - loss of speech aphasia
- Frontal lobe stroke - personality changes
