Self discrepancy theory
Our self is multifaced and complex, one person has different self-states. Consequences arise when these different self states are compared and the discrepancy between them is discovered.
3 self states
Actual self: Attributes I have
Ideal self: Attributes I wish to have(own wishes feel dissatisfied if not fulfilled)
Ought self: Attributes I should have (expectations from others, others wishes, feel guilt if not fulfilled)
controversy between ideal and actual selves and ideal and ought selves
Actual and ideal self compared are expected to be dissatisfaction, depression
ideal and ought selves compared should elicit anxiety, pressure and guilt
Assessment of self discrepancies
In a questionnaire one must list 10 attributes for how he is right now and for how he would like to be. the numbr of matches between those two bring up self discrepancies
a list of attributes is given and they have to choose which ones relate to the actual self and which ones to the ideal self
Another method is a scale that shows a variety of body sizes patient has tpchoose which one theyd like (iddeal) and theyre actual body. Substract the ideal from actual and voila self discrepancy
Self discrepancy and body image
women dssatisfaction with there bodies is related with elf discrepancies most women have them
man have them too but less in their balance is all about muscularitiy
sexual orientations and self discrepancies
gay man feel more self discrepncy tha straight man
discrepancies between lesbian and heterosexual woman did not differ
Clinical populations
Bulimic patienets tend to have a greater sekf discrepancy thus wrosening their body dissatisfaction
in anorexic patients self deiscrepancies average out because they dont necessarily want to go lower
the problem with this patients is that they know their problem but htey wont change
self discrepancies and ampount are indicators of patients will to change
Self discrepancy and weight/appearance related behavior
Actual-ideal self discrepancies are mostly a predictor of bulimic symptoms, while actual-ought discrepancies are mostly related to anorexic symptoms
self dicrepancies elicit behaviors that are aimed at minimizing discrepancies dieting exercising…
also self discrepancies elicit behaviors that will help them escape the negative connsequences (taking drugs, overeating)
