What is variety and contrast?
It is an art principle that creates diversity, differences and opposition in artworks.
They are the opposite of monotonous and repetitive use of elements/
What is Variety?
It is an assortment of lines, colors and other elements of art work that create interest in a piece of artwork.
It is achieved by adding something different to a design to provide a break in the repetition. It works through juxtaposition and contrast.
It is placing of elements side by side leaving it up to the reader to establish connections and discover or impose meaning.

Give and explain ways to incorporate variety or variance in painting.
- Color variance- value saturation hue.
- Line variance- thick or thin, broken or continuous, long or short, straight or curved.
- Brushwork variance- the pressure used, amount of paint used, surface painted on, how dry the brush is, angle of the brush
- Technique variance- means and methods by which paint is applied.
- Shape variance- big or small, geometric or organic, solid or weak, colorful or dull.
- Edge variance- represents the transition between two shapes. hard, soft or lost.
What is contrast?
- It is when two or more elements are put in opposition to each other.
- Arrangement of opposite elements and effects to create visual interest, excitement and drama.
What are the reasons for contrast?
- For emphasis and direction.
- Highlight information.
- Create interest/ attention
Give the seven types of contrast and explain and give examples for each.
Color Contrast- light and dark colors.
Texture Contrast- smooth and rough textures.
Shape Contrast- large and small shapes.
Line Contrast- curve and straight lines.
Size Contrast- large and small objects/ subjects.
Temperature Contrast- warm and cool.
Space Contrast- positive versus negative spaces.
