EMPHASIS AND DOMINACE Flashcards
What is emphasis?
- also known as dominance.
- the principle that attaches the viewer’s attention or assume more importance than others in the same composition.
Give the three levels of dominance or emphasis. Explain each.
Dominant- object given the most visual weight and advances to the foreground in the composition.
Sub-Dominant- middle ground of the composition.
Subordinate- the element of tertiary emphasis that recedes to the background of the composition,
Give the four ways to achieve dominance.
- Contrast
- Color
- Location/Placement
- Focal Point
Contrast for dominance. Explain and give example.
Contrast of color, texture, or shape (matching handbag and hat, 1944)
Color for dominance. Explain and give example.
The use of a neutral background isolates the point of emphasis. (The Light House, by Edward Hopper)
Location for dominance. Explain and give example.
Placement in a strategic location will call attention to a particular element of a design. (Mount St. Michael, France. photo by C. Jirousek)
Focal point for dominance. Explain and give exaple.
Visually, the focal point of an image is the place where your eyes are drawn to first and the other areas are just subordinate to it. (conversion of St. Paul by Caravaggio0
How many focal point does the conversion of St. Paul have?
4 focal point namely;
1st two- the side of the hoarse and the fallen soldier.
3rd- dark place between the hoarse and the man in the foreground
4th- hoarse rump to the legs to the hand and kneecap of soldier to the red cloth up to the right arm then to the right man back to where we started.
Give the 2 major type of Visual Emphasis.
- Emphasizing one element while all the other elements of the work are made subordinate or less important.
- Emphasizing the whole with no specific focal point.
How to create a focal point.
- Contrast
- Isolation
- Convergence or pointing
- Framing
- Focus or detail
Separating an element or group of elements from the rest in the picture plane to bring focus to it.
Isolation
Leading the eye towards particular focal point by use of perspective or other elements within the work.
Convergence or Pointing.
What is framing?
Setting apart certain objects through borders/ boundaries or spaces surrounding that object to put elements away from the rest.
Give three facts about Focus or detail.
- our eyes are naturally drawn to things which are detailed and focused.
- common technique used in photography.
- uses our natural propensity to seek out objects in more detail and controlling where the viewer’s eyes would go into.
