Variation, Inheritance, Natural Selection, Extinction, Adaption and Change. Flashcards
What is the shape of DNA?
Double Helix.
What is Discontinuous Variation?
Can only result in certain values.
What is Continuous Variation?
Can result in any value in a range.
What is extinction?
When a species dies out.
Give 5 factors leading to extinction. (5 marks)
- Changes to the organisms enviroment
- Destruction of their habitat
- New Diseases
- New Predators
- Increased Competition
What does Endangered mean?
When a species is at risk of extinction.
Name all 4 Scientists who produced the structure of DNA
- Watson
- Franklin
- Crick
- Wilkins
What do chromosomes contain?
Long Strands of DNA
What are gametes
Reproductive cells (Sperm and Egg)
How much chromosomes do each gamete contain?
23 Chromosomes.
What is Natural Selection?
When organisms in a species show variation, the ones that receive the more useful characteristics survive, reproduce and pass on successful genetics to off-spring, and this process is repeated many times, and can lead to a new species.
What are adaptations?
Characteristics that help an organism survive and reproduce.
What is competition?
When animals compete for food, water and space.
What are environmental changes?
Change in an organisms environment. The organism usually adapts to these changes.
What does it mean if Predator and Prey are interdependent?
When a change in population of one animal directly affects the population of the other.
