Breathing and Respiration Flashcards
Where is the diaphragm located in the body?
Right below the lungs.
What happens to the pressure in your lungs if you inhale?
It decreases.
What happens to the pressure in your lungs if you exhale?
It increases.
Where are the intercostal muscles located?
Between the ribs.
What do the intercostal muscles do during inhalation?
They contract and pull the ribs up and out
What do the intercostal muscles do during exhalation
They relax and pull the ribs in and down
What does the diaphragm do during inhalation?
They contract and flatten
What does the diaphragm do during exhaltion?
They relax and move up
What happens to the volume of your chest when you inhale?
It increases
What happens to the volume in your chest when you exhale?
It decreases
What happens to the air in your lungs when you exhale?
It is forced out
What is respiration?
A process in which energy from glucose is released in our bodies.
What is aerobic respiration?
Respiration using oxygen
What is anaerobic respiration?
Respiration without oxygen
What is the equation for aerobic respiration?
Glucose + Oxygen —> carbon dioxide + water + energy
What is the equation for anaerobic respiration?
Glucose —> Lactic Acid + Energy
Where does respiration occur in the cells?
In the mitochondria.
Where does gas exchange occur in the body?
The Alveoli.
What gases are exchanged in the alveoli?
Carbon Dioxide and Oxygen.
What gas is diffused out the cells?
Carbon Dioxide.
What gas is diffused into the cells?
Oxygen.
What can lactic acid cause?
Cramps.
What is carbon dioxide diffused into?
The blood plasma.
What carries oxygen through the body?
Red blood cells.
How do you measure lung volume?
Breath fully into a plastic tube and air from your lungs pushes water out the bottle.
volume of air in the plastic bottle = lung volume
What does tar do to the body?
Clogs the lining of the the lungs and alveoli.
What is nicotine?
An addictive stimulant
What does carbon monoxide do to the body?
Stops blood from carrying oxygen.
What diseases can smoking cause?
- Heart disease
- Emphysema
- Respiratory infections
- Strokes
- Lung cancer
