Food Chains and Food Webs Flashcards
What is a food chain?
The showing of the transfer of energy between organisms.
What do arrows show?
The direction of energy transfer.
What are food webs
A lot of food chains connected together in an eco-system.
What is a producer?
The start of any food chain and is the one that makes its own food. Mostly green plant/algae.
What is a primary consumer?
The organism that eats the producer. They are most commonly herbivores.
What is a secondary consumer?
The organism that eats primary consumers. They are most commonly carnivores.
What is tertiary consumer?
The organism that eats the secondary consumer. They are most commonly carnivores. Most of these consumers are also Apex Predators.
What are Quaternary consumers?
The organism that eat the tertiary consumer. They are most commonly carnivores. These are also known as the top consumers.
What are Apex Predators?
The last link in the food chain.
What is prey?
The organism that is eaten by another organism.
What are predators?
The organism that eats another organism.
What is bioaccumulation?
The build up of chemicals, like insecticides, passed along a food chain.
