Variation Flashcards
What are the two types of variation?
Interspecific and Intraspecific
Define interspecific variation.
The variation that exists between different species.
Define intraspecific variation.
The differences that occur within a species.
What can variation be caused by?
Genetic factors, environmental factors or both.
What are variations of a gene known as?
Alleles.
What do the alleles an organism has make up?
Its genotype.
What is phenotype?
The characteristics displayed by an organism.
Where do you get genes from?
Your parents- genetic variation is inherited.
What is variation?
Differences that exist between individuals.
What does genetics arise as a result of?
Mutations- sudden changes to genes or chromosomes can be passed on to the next generation.
Meiosis- mixes up genetic material before it is passed on to the gametes, all of which are therefore different.
Fusion of gametes- in sexual reproduction, offspring inherit genetic material from both parents and are therefore different from both of them. Which gamete fuses with which is random which further adding to the variety of characteristics and offspring may have.
