Transpiration Flashcards
Why is transpiration necessary?
Materials such as mineral ions, sugars and hormones are moved around the plant dissolved in water. This water is carried up the plant by the transpiration pull. Without transpiration, water could not be so plentiful and the transport of materials would not be so rapid.
What factors affect transpiration?
Light
Temperature
Humidity
Air Movement
How does light affect transpiration?
Stomata open in the light and close in the dark.
How does temperature affect transpiration?
Alters the kinetic energy of the water molecules and the relative humidity of the air.
How does humidity affect transpiration?
Affects the water potential gradient between the air spaces in the leaf and the atmosphere.
How does air movement affect transpiration?
Changes the water potential gradient by altering the rate at which moist air is removed from around the leaf.
