Variables and Hypotheses Flashcards
Hypotheses
Predictions a researcher makes at the beginning of an
investigation regarding it’s outcome.
A researcher will always make two hypotheses at the outset of a study.
NULL HYPOTHESIS:
States the independent variable will have no effect on the
dependent variable. It also states that any observed effect will be due to chance.
ALTERNATIVE HYPOTHESIS:
States the independent variable will have an impact on the dependent variable.
DIRECTIONAL HYPOTHESIS:
Will state how the independent variable will impact the dependent variable.
A directional hypothesis will be chosen if previous research has been conducted on the topic.
NON-DIRECTIONAL HYPOTHESIS:
Will state that the independent variable will impact the dependent variable but not specify how.
A non-directional hypothesis will be chosen if no previous
research has been conducted on the topic.
