Self report techniques and confounding variables Flashcards
Confounding variable:
A factor that confuses the results of a study or experiment. It is a hidden factor that affects both the independent variable and the dependent variable, making it difficult to tell what is really causing the effect.
Interviewer bias:
An interviewer’s behaviour may influence the
answers the respondent gives.
Social desirability bias:
The tendency to respond to answers in a manner that will be viewed as favourable.
Self-report techniques:
(Interviews can either be)
Structured - with set questions.
Unstructured - developing over the course of the interview based on the answers given.
(Questions in self-report studies can either be)
Open - where participants are able to elaborate on and explain their answers fully.
Closed - where they choose from pre-set answers.
