Variables and data Flashcards
Nominal data
- named categories
- if just two categories then this is binary data
Ordinal data
- a set of ordered categories
- e.g answers to an item on questionnaire
Discrete data
-values are whole numbers
Continuous data
-values of the measurements can take any number in a range
Interval data
-measurements where the difference between two values is meaningful e.g degree celsius
Ratio data
-has a clear definition of a zero point so ratios are meaningful such as height and weight- weight can be halved
Independent variable
- controlled by the experimenter, presumed to have a causal/antecedent effect on dependent variable
- more than one independent variable can affect a single dependent variable
Dependent variable
- depends on the value of independent variable
- e.g smoking is independent variable, cancer is the dependent variable
Mediator variable
- mediates the effects of A in causing B- C is the mediator variable
- statistical mediation
- if there is a partial mediator then when this is absent it reduces but does not eliminate the effect of A on B
- C cannot cause B
- analysed using regression tests
Non-parametric tests
-nominal and ordinal data are analysed using nonparametric tests
Parametric tests
-most measured variables are analysed using parametric tests
