Variables - 5a Flashcards
is a characteristic or attribute of interest in the research study that can take on different values and is not constant.
Variables
The. Variables may be
Numerical or non numerical
The groups in these variables do not have an order or ranking in them.
Nominal variables. In categories
Example for nominal group
Gender
Food cops
Religion: Christian, Moslem, Buddhism, etc.
These are grouped variables that are ordered or ranked in increasing or decreasing order
Ordinal variables
Numerical variables :
Continues
Discrete
Variables can develop more and more accurate
measurements depending on the instrument used, e.g.:
Height in centimetres (2.5 cm or 2.546 cm or 2.543216 cm)
Temperature in degrees Celsius (37.2°C or 37.19999°C etc.)
Continuous
The specific way in which a variable is measured in a particular study is called
the operational definition
The operational definition also helps to control the variable by making the
measurement constant.
The variable that is used to describe or measure the problem under study is called the
DEPENDENT variable.
The variables that are used to describe or measure the factors that are assumed to cause or at least to influence the problem are called the
INDEPENDENT variables.
Whether a variable is dependent or independent is determined by the
statement of the problem and the objectives of the study
In almost every study these variables should be considered
Background variables
BACKGROUND VARIABLES, such
as age, sex, educational level, socioeconomic status,
marital status and religion,
Only ……… important to the study should be
measured.
