variables Flashcards
co variables
measurements made that have been compared to see if theyre associated
iv, dv, cv
iv - change
dv - measure
cv - same
extraneous variable
anything apart from IV that effects DV
issues w extraneous variable
could show a a causal relationship when there isnt one
list 4 issues that come from extraneous variables
- demand characteristcs
- ppt variables
- situational variables, environmental factors present in one condition but not in other that could change beh eg noise or temp
- order effects
what is a confounding variables
a variable that changes systemeatically bet levels of IV
used interchangably w extraeous variables
control for ppt variables using …
- random allocation of ppt to conditions
- matched pairs
control for order effects
counterbalancing
control for situational variables
standardisation, each ppt has same experience only thing different is IV
control for demand characteristics
- single or double blind
in a single ppt doesnt know the aim - standardised procedure
pilot study is a
small scale version of the study before the main one
aims of a pilot study
- reveal extraneous variables that need to be controlled
- tasks may be confusing so need to be changed or they may be discovered that task gives rise to demand characteristc
- takes too long so alter standardised procedure
- in an observation may find out that the behavioural categories arent fully operationalised
peer review
before publication researcher must shoe written up study to other experts, in the processes un accounted for variables may be identifed which have confounded results. study may be found to lack internal validity and may be repeated
